3. Eat cruciferous vegetables—cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, rutabagas and turnips. These are
good sources of the indoles (natural cancer-prevention substances) and fiber that help reduce the risk of
several cancers, especially colon cancer.
4. Reduce your consumption of smoked or charcoal-broiled foods. Before you begin cooking on the barbecue,
first microwave meat for a few minutes and pour off the accumulated juices. This will decrease carcinogen
exposure.
5. Drink moderate amounts of alcoholic beverages if you drink any at all. Ideally, you should have less than one
drink or 4 oz. (125 mL) of wine per day.
6. Reduce your consumption of red meats, animal fats and tropical oils such as palm and coconut.
7. Keep physically trim and fit to avoid being overweight. This helps prevent cancer by reducing excesses of
hormones that may promote cancer growth. It is as important to exercise as it is to maintain good nutrition.
Even moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, helps to burn fat, make muscles firm and reduce fat bulges. Of
course, exercise is also good for the heart!
Lifestyle
1. Don't smoke. If you do smoke, stop.
2. Limit your alcohol intake to one drink a day or less.
3. Don't drink and smoke at the same time. This combination increases the chance for head and neck cancers by
about 50 times.
